Articles & Interviews

Borrowed from the Bard
Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins's West Side Story is perhaps the most famous retelling of a Shakespearean play; Romeo and Juliet transform into Tony and Maria of a gang-ridden New York City. But other directors also pilfer the works of the Bard in an attempt to create modern-day classics. Some of these succeed; some don't. Amazon.com takes a look at the many guises of Shakespearean film.

Kieslowksi: Poet of the Moving Image
Many of director Krzysztof Kieslowski's films have not been released in the United States, yet the ones that have reached across borders to a worldwide audience have moved and touched filmgoers, most notably his trilogy, Red, White, and Blue. Amazon.com contributor Kristine McKenna spoke with the Polish director shortly before his death, and she examines for us the life and work of this remarkable filmmaker.

Focus On: Akira Kurosawa
Using celluloid as his canvas, director Akira Kurosawa painted magnificent masterpieces depicting epic stories of both the East and West. Films such as Ran, The Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo influenced filmmakers and astounded audiences. Amazon.com contributor Marshall Fine looks at the life and work of this remarkable director.

Translated and Transformed
Why mess with a good thing? Simple logic: if a film works, don't tinker with it. The Magnificent Seven, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, and Scent of a Woman are wonderful as is. But how many people know that all these movies were remade from international films that are equally great, if not even better? Jon Burlingame surveys the Americanization of international originals.

1969: A New Hollywood Goes Joy Riding
In 1969 the political and social changes that crackled through America helped shape one of the most brilliant years in Hollywood history. From Easy Rider to Midnight Cowboy and The Wild Bunch, the films of 1969 deserve a special celebratory anniversary this year (they may be 30 now, but we still trust them).
